Statement:

All patients with high blood pressure were found to be having some worry or the other.

Conclusions:

I. Mental tensions may affect blood pressure.

II. If one has no mental tensions one may not suffer from high blood pressure.

  • A.if only conclusion I follows.
  • B.if only conclusion II follows.
  • C.if either I or II follows.
  • D.if both I and II follow.

Answer: D

The statement tells us that patients having high blood pressure were found to be having some worry or the other. At first glance it appears that having high blood pressure is connected to worry. However, on closer inspection we can see that there is no definitive evidence, medical or otherwise, to show that worry causes high blood pressure or vice-versa in the given statement. It is possible that this link is purely coincidental, hence any conclusion which shows a definitive link between the two is to be avoided. Conclusion I follows on account of the word 'may' which links the two terms 'worry' and 'blood pressure'. Conclusion II, which is the converse of I, also follows on account of the word 'may not'. Hence, both conclusion I and II follow.
