Ten years ago, Kumar was thrice as old as Sailesh was but 10 years hence, he will be only twice as old. Find Kumar’s present age ?

Answer: B

Let Kumar’s present age be "\(x\)" years and Sailesh’s present age be "\(y\)" years.
Then, according to the first condition,

\(x - 10 = 3(y - 10) => x - 3y = - 20 ........(1)\)

Now, Kumar’s age after 10 years = \((x + 10)\) years.

Sailesh’s age after 10 years = \((y + 10)\) years.

\((x + 10) = 2 (y + 10) => x - 2y = 10 ......(2)\)

Solving (1) and (2),

we get \(x\) = 70 and \(y\) = 30

Kumar’s present age = 70 years    and  Sailesh’s present age = 30 years.

0.1 decates ago, Vijaya was quadrice as old as her daughter Simran. 0.6 decades hence, Vijaya’s age will beat her daughter’s age by 0.9 decades. The proportion of the current ages of Vijaya and Simran is : [ 0.1 Decates =1 Year; quadrice = 4 times]

Answer: D

Let, Ages of Vijaya and Simran – 1 year ago was  \(4A\) and \(A\) years respectively.

Then, \([(4A + 1) + 6] – [(A + 1) + 6] = 9\)

\(\Rightarrow3A = 9 \)

\(\Rightarrow A=3\)

Needed Ratio =   \((4A + 1) : (A + 1) = 13 : 4\)

The sum of ages of 5 children born at the intervals of 3 years each is 50 years. What is the age of the youngest child?

Answer: A

Let the ages of children be \(x, (x + 3), (x + 6), (x + 9)\) and \((x+12)\) years

Then \(x + (x + 3) + (x + 6) + (x + 9) + (x + 12) = 50\)

\(\Rightarrow \) \(5x=20\)

\(\Rightarrow\) \(x=4\)

\(\therefore \) Age of the youngest child \(=x=4\) years

Present ages of Sameer and Anand are in the ratio of 5 : 4 respectively. Three years hence, the ratio of their ages will become 11 : 9 respectively. What is Anand's present age in years?

Answer: A

Let the present ages of Sameer and Anand be \(5x\)years and  \(4x\)years respectively.

then \(\frac{5x+3}{4x+3}= \frac{11}{9}\)

\(\Rightarrow\) \(9\left ( 5x+3 \right )=11\left ( 4x+3\right )\)

\(\Rightarrow\) \(45x+27=44x+23\)

\(\Rightarrow \) \(45x - 44x = 33 - 27\)

\(\Rightarrow \) \(x = 6.\)

\(\therefore \) Anand's present age \(= 4x = 24 years\)

The ages of Anushka, Kajal and Charu latha together are 57 years. Bharti is thrice as old as Anushka and Charu latha is 12 years older than Anushka. Then, the respective age of Anushka, Kajal and Charu latha is ?

Answer: D

Let Anushka age = \(x \) years

Charu latha 12 yrs older than Anushka so Charu latha age =  \(x=12\)
Kajal is thrice as old as Anushka so Kajal age =  \(3x\)

The ages of Anushka, Kajal and Charu latha together are 57 years

i.e , \( x + (x+12) + 3x = 57\)

\(\Rightarrow 5x = 45\)

\(\therefore x=9\)

Anushka age = 9
Kajal age =  \(3x = 27\)

Charu latha age = \(x+12 = 21\)

A father said to his son, "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth". If the father's age is 38 years now, the son's age five years back was:

Answer: A

Let the son's present age be \(x\) years. Then, \((38 - x) = x\)

\(\Rightarrow 2x = 38\)

\(\Rightarrow x=19\)

\(\therefore\) Son's age 5 years back \((19 - 5) = 14\) years.

One year ago, the ratio of Sooraj's and Vimal's age was  6:7 respectively. Four years hence, this ratio would become 7:8. How old is Vimal?

Answer: C

Let the age of Sooraj and Vimal, 1 year ago, be  \(6x\) and  \(7x\) respectively

Given that, four years hence, this ratio would become 7:8

\(⇒ ( 6 x + 5 ) : ( 7 x + 5 ) = 7 : 8\)

\(⇒ 8 ( 6 x + 5 ) = 7 ( 7 x + 5 )\)

\(⇒ 48 x + 40 = 49 x + 35\)

\(⇒ x = 5 \)

Vimal's present age = \(7 x + 1 = 7 × 5 + 1 = 36 \) years
