Statement – Courses of Action

Direction for [ Question No: 21 To 30 ] :

In each question below is given a statement followed by three courses of action numbered I, II and III. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then decide which of the three given suggested courses of action logically follows for pursuing.

21.

Statement: Residents from Model Colony coming under North Ward of City X have complained to the Ward Officer that for last three days the tap water in the ward is contaminated and no action is being initiated by municipal staff.

Courses of Action:

1. The Ward Officer of North Ward should initiate action against residents who have lodged complaints against municipal staff.

2. The Ward Officer should ask his junior officer to visit Model Colony to assess the actual condition of water with his staff and to get samples of water tested from laboratories.

3. The Ward Officer should ask Ward Engineer to check water installations and pipelines in the Model Colony area.

Answer: B

The residents complained to the Ward Officer regarding the negligence of duty of his subordinates. So, I does not follow. Also, it is the moral duty of the Officer to listen to the complaints, ascertain the quality of water in the colony and get all pipelines and connections checked for any damage or leak that could have opened the way for contamination of water. Thus, both II and III follow.

22.

Statement: The Company X has rejected first lot of values supplied by Company A and has cancelled its entire huge order quoting use of inferior quality material and poor craftsmanship.

Courses of Action:

1. The Company A needs to investigate functioning of its purchase, production and quality control departments.

2. The Company A should inspect all the valves rejected by Company X.

3. The Company A should inform Company X that steps have been taken for improvement and renegotiate schedule of supply.

Answer: A

First of all, company A should inspect the rejected valves to ensure if they are really sub-standard. If yes, it should scrutinise its working thoroughly and remove its lackenings, be it in the quality of raw material or craftsmanship. So, both I and II follow. III seems to be a far-off action which can be implemented only after the first two steps are put into practice. Thus, III does not follow,

Statement: The day time temperatures in this summer have been four to five degree Celsius above the normal temperature across the country.

Courses of Action:

1. All the district headquarters should be alerted to send prompt reports of death due to heat waves in their jurisdiction.

2. The Government machinery should be put on high alert and provided with necessary equipments to prevent any untoward incident.

3. The Government should make necessary arrangements to provide drinking water in all the areas affected due to extreme heat waves.

Answer: E

The situation demands extending as much help and relief as possible, to the common people, thus making it easy for them to cope up with extreme hot weather. So, only II and III follow.

24.

Statement: There has been an unprecedented increase in use of malpractices by the students during various examinations held in the country this year.

Courses of Action:

1. All the concerned authorities conducting these examinations should immediately take effective measures to curb this menace.

2. All those students who are detected to have used unfair means should be debarred from appearing in any of these examinations for the next three years.

3. Using unfair means should immediately be made cognizable offence by passing necessary legislations.

Answer: B

Use of malpractices does away with the basic essence of examinations and hence it ought to be checked. So, I follows. Also, the fear of harsh punishments would prevent students from using unfair means. So, II also follows. But declaring it a crime may spoil the career of students who are caught using unfair means. So, III does not follow.

25.

Statement: People residing in some tribal areas are far from education.

Courses of Action:

1. Government should render all help to the NGOs to open schools there.

2. A mass awareness programme must be initiated in these areas.

3. Social workers should be entrusted with the job of educating them.

Answer: A

Clearly, people in tribal areas ought to be made aware of the need of education and persuaded to send children to schools. But at the same time proper facilities to render education must also be available. So, both I and II follow. However, education by social workers shall be a temporary remedy. Thus, III does not follow.

Statement: Large number of people have become critically ill after consuming spurious liquor from a local shop.

Courses of Action:

I. The Government should immediately close down all the shops selling liquor till the stocks are tested for presence of toxicity.

II. The owner of the liquor shop should be asked to leave the town and open a shop elsewhere.

III. The owner of the liquor shop should immediately be arrested and tried for criminal negligence.

Answer: D

Clearly, the owner of the shop should be punished for selling spurious liquor. Further, attempts should be made to unearth other such unscrupulous liquor sellers by conducting raids and testing samples collected from different shops. So, both II and III follow. However, sending the liquor shop owner to another place may create a problem elsewhere also. So, II does not follow.

Statement: The condition of all the major roads in the city has deteriorated due to incessant rain during the last two months.

Courses of Action:

1. The city civic authority should deploy additional traffic staff to regulate the vehicular movement.

2. The city civic authority should immediately make arrangements for repairs of the damaged roads.

3. Motorists should be alerted at various places by putting up sign boards about the bad patches of the roads to enable them to plan their journey accordingly.

Answer: D

Clearly, all the given courses of action aim at either getting the damaged roads repaired or regulating movement of traffic on, bad roads and making journey easy for all vehicle owners. So, all the courses follow.

28.

Statement: There are more than 200 villages in the hill area of Uttar Pradesh which are severely damaged due to cyclone and it causes an extra burden of Rs 200 crore on State Government for relief and rehabilitation work.

Courses of Action:

1. People of hill area should be shifted to other safer places.

2. State Government should ask more financial support from Central Government.

3. Government should levy relief tax to the corporate sector to ease the additional burden.

Answer: E

Since severe damage has been caused by cyclone, people in affected villages ought to be shifted to safer places. Also, since relief work entails huge amounts, the State Government needs to pool up funds by either of the ways given in II and III. So, I and either II or III follow.

Statement: Major part of the rabi crop in the district is damaged due to unseasonal heavy rains during the last few days.

Courses of Action:

1. The government should grant relief to the affected farmers to compensate their loss.

2. The government should provide free seed and fertilizer to the farmers for the kharif season.

3. The government should waive all the loans taken for the rabi crop by the affected farmers.

Answer: E

The crisis clearly demands extending as much relief to farmers as possible. So, all I, II and III follow.

30.

Statement: It has been reported by one of the TV channels that the answer papers of Board examination of one State are evaluated by students studying in the same standard with the help of model answers as instructed by the examiners.

Courses of Action:

1. All such examiners should be immediately suspended from their official positions.

2. All such papers evaluated by the students should be immediately confiscated and got evaluated by qualified teachers.

3. The Board should explore possibilities even though they are remote, of getting the answer papers of this examination evaluated by computerised machines.

Answer: D

Students who work hard all the year round to perform well at the Board examination deserve to be evaluated correctly by experts, and not mechanically or by inexperienced people. Besides, examiners who shirk their duty of evaluating answer papers, ought to be punished. So, both I and II follow, while III does not.
